The Jidrel Mouhguen ERC

With a view to determining how to ensure a greater involvement of Mauritanian citizens in the national process launched at the initiative of the President of the Republic in favor of training and the acquisition of knowledge, a micro-realisation project supportive of literacy, post-literacy and the promotion of peace was submitted to the Mauritania National Commission for UNESCO and the Government.

After its approval, the Jidrel Mouhguen commune was selected to host the project.

Thus, the network of Mauritanian Educational Resource Centres was set up in May 1996, its initial activities being the construction of the ERC in Jidrel Mouhguen.
It is situated in the Jidrel Mohguen commune, 36 km from the city of Rosso, along the Senegal River and 240 km from the capital, Nouakchott. Construction works started in August 1997 and it was inaugurated on 20 May 1998.
A second ERC is currently being built in the Maghtalahjar locality, 370 km east of the capital, in the Brakna region and the Magtalahjar department on the raod “of hope.”

During the inauguration of the centre in May 1998, attended by hundreds of villagers and broadcast on national television, a teaching and learning materials fair was organized to facilitate exchanges between designers and users materials for functional literacy and the promotion of women in the national languages.

Functional literacy stands during the fair.

Former activities

In addition to the organisation of the fair, young volunteers and members of the Jidrel Mohguen UNESCO Club launched proximity literacy classes in each village of the commune to reach their target populations (adults, particularly women, as well as illiterate children).
Within the framework of its assistance to children in difficulty, the UNESCO Club, in collaboration with the Non Gouvernemental Organisation “ASSISTANCE SANS FRONTIERE” organized literacy classes for children in difficulty on the basis of an informal programme aiming at guiding them towards vocational training.

Thanks to a twinning partnership between the Jidrel Mohguen commune and the French association of “Evry Gregy sur Yerres”, the ERC library was updated thanks to a donation of over 100 books.
In 1999, the Jidrel Mohguen UNESCO Club organised Malaria eradication days aimed at sensitising the rural populatioins on public health issues.
