While Europe and America have an abundant
documentation on the black continent, Africa has for a long time,
remained silent. It has not only a small part of its archives, but
these archives are inaccessible because they are disregarded or
ignored not to mention that they are not computerized. Oral tradition
is today recognized as a source of information as invaluable as
written archives or records. |

It is not only necessary to continue these inventories
and stocktaking efforts in the countries, but also to make them
available to researchers and the populations. The action of UNESCO
and its partners will also be focused on the preparation of safeguard
plans and strategies. A better knowledge and in fact, an improved
ownership of the sites by the populations of the countries will
be a major aspect. |
