Tangible Heritage

The protection and conservation of the cultural and natural heritage is a priority for the sub-region. The short and scattered inventories of the sites have obviously revealed that these sites are, for most of them, in an advanced state of dilapidation and often dereliction. Some have even disappeared.

Fort Bullen(Gambia)

Cidade Velha (Cabo Verde)

It is not only necessary to continue these inventories and stocktaking efforts in the countries, but also to make them available to researchers and the populations. The action of UNESCO and its partners will also be focused on the preparation of safeguard plans and strategies. A better knowledge and in fact, an improved ownership of the sites by the populations of the countries will be a major aspect.
