The slave route

The “slave route” project, by virtue of its historical itinerary, is likely to strengthen on the one hand, the relations between African countries themselves, and on the other hand, Africa with the other continents concerned (Europe, the Americas, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean) through the slave trade and slavery.

James Island (Gambie)
The slave trade has generated sites and places of memory which can constitute motivating factors for cultural tourism: the tourism of memory. Launched in 1994 by UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization (WTO), the cultural tourism programme on the slave route is aimed at creating the favourable conditions for the restoration, preservation and promotion of monuments and sites of the slave trade and slavery.
