Cidade Velha, a probable case of registration on the list of World Heritage Sites

Actualités

The biennial sectoral priorities for 2008-2009 are :

1. to promote cultural diversity through the safeguarding of heritage in all its dimensions and the development of cultural expressions ;

2. to promote social cohesion by encouraging pluralism and cultural dialogue and, the establishment of a culture of peace.

Cidade Velha

The guidelines for action in UNESCO’s cultural Sector are therefore defined from the standpoint of these priorities but also from the specifities and special features of each country.

At the Dakar based UNESCO Office which covers Senegal, Cape Verde, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, the emphasis will be increasingly placed on thematic research and some targeted activities relating to:

Inter-cultural diversity and dialogue through the project entitled« the slave route » and UNESCO programme « interreligious dialogue » whose major objective is to promote dialogue between the different religions, religious and humanistic traditions. Here, the analysis of the syncretic forms of religions and proper coexistence will be highlighted.

It is an undeniable fact today that no human society can develop harmoniously without endorsing the option of building its own development on its own values of civilization. Thus, culture, the vector of growth and welfare can be rightly considered here only if its ownership is reassumed by the populations and recognized as a genuine factor of development.
