LITERACY AND NON FORMAL EDUCATION
Functional
literacy plays an important part in the wholesome education and personal
growth of the individual, and it contributes therefore to the long-lasting
development of the country. It allows the individual to be self-sufficient
and to increase profit in income-generating activities. Therefore, it
plays a part in education as a means to eradicating poverty.
Countries that are currently in a post-conflict situation especially,
such as Liberia, Sierra-Leone and Guinea Bissau, need support for the
development of their activities in functional literacy programmes, in
particular the production of reading and writing materials and the training
of both teachers and learners.

The
International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8th
by the national authorities, the non-governmental organisations
and the BREDA in six countries covered by the BREDA representation.
The aim of these activities is to raise public awareness in these
countries on the need to fight against illiteracy and to allow
for development.

The BREDA
is intending to organize a sub-regional seminar-workshop open to all
West African countries for the purpose of sharing experiences in terms
of strategies for community-based literacy and non formal education
and the harmonizing of orientations and activities in the area of literacy.
