NEW TECHNOLOGIES

It is widely acknowledged that one of the greatest challenges facing the development and the quality of education in Africa relates to the number of teachers that are unqualified for the type of courses they teach.

In order to overcome this challenge, it is necessary and urgent to put into place effective on-the-job training and retraining programmes for teachers.

The nature and scope of this training reveal that it is crucial to make use of the new technologies, through open and distance learning.

The BREDA will design and produce a briefcase of multimedia materials for on-the-job training and retraining of teachers using the new technologies of information and communication. In the initial stage, this activity will be carried out in a limited number of countries as part of a pilot project.

Forthcoming activities in 2001

  • The designing, writing out, validation and production of teaching and learning multimedia materials for on-the-job training and retraining of teachers
  • Holding of on-the-job training and retraining sessions for teachers

Furthermore, in order to reinforce the science and mathematics syllabuses, the BREDA will undertake the production of a multimedia virtual network aimed at strengthening the learning of Science, Mathematics and Technology in Sub-Saharan Africa. The network will attempt to combine efficient learning methods with the relevant media in computing, video and communication. The network will allow the teaching institutions, the teachers and the learners to work together on determining study levels, translating these levels into teaching/learning activities, producing multimedia learning materials on the web, training staff, distributing, testing and improving curricula, teaching materials and approaches, and assessing the learning levels and programmes.

Forthcoming activities in 2001 for the network:

• Designing of a comprehensive multimedia programme covering the whole of the science and mathematics syllabus of the last two years of secondary school

• The creation of a group of specialists in multimedia production in each of the countries belonging to the network

• The training of personnel in the use of learning modules for science and mathematics in all the pilot schools.
