POLICIES
AND REFORMS
A
world declaration on higher education
and a priority framework of action
for the transformation and the development
of higher education were adpted by
The
World Conference on Higher Education
(WCHE) organized by UNESCO in 1998
in Paris. These documents highlight
the crucial role played by higher
education in the process of achieving
a viable human development and define
the missions and functions of higher
education institutions along with
the actions to be implemented to facilitate
the adaptation of higher education
to the current and future needs of
society.
Since
1999, the BREDA has been following
up the World Conference, mainly through
an extended debate on the policies
and reforms currently implemented
in the member states, the writing
of case studies, the elaboration of
principles and guiding plans as well
as the reinforcement of regional networks
in areas related to higher education.
In
2001, the BREDA will continue to support
member states and higher education
institutions, mainly in the organization
of colloquiums and seminars to discuss
policies and reforms brought to higher
education, advisory services, the
reinforcement of university networks
and support to regional NGOs such
as the Association of African Universities
and the Panafrican Union of Students.
The BREDA will also support the activities
of the African Regional Committee
in charge of following up the World
Conference on Higher Education.
