Minister of National Education of Senegal, His Exc. Mr. Hans Heinrich
Wrede, Chairman of UNESCO's Executive Board was on official mission
in Dakar 15 - 17 September 2004. |
The 3-days visit of Mr. Wrede in Senegal,
aimed at strengthening the monitoring of programs currently being
implemented and to consolidate the cooperation between UNESCO and
Senegal, in the field of Education, Sciences, Culture and Communication.

At the meeting of United Nations Agency Heads

Mr. Wrede met with the Director of BREDA
(UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Africa) before he was received
by the Minister of National Education, Pr Moustapha Sourang and
the Minister for Culture Safiétou Ndiaye Diop. He later attended
the meeting of United Nations Agency Heads, the Consultation of
UNESCO-Africa HIV/AIDS focal points as well as the closing ceremony
of the "experience-sharing" workshop on "teacher
training projects in francophone countries of ECOWAS and CEMAC using
distance learning". |
Cultural events included a visit to the
IFAN Museum, la Maison de la Culture Douta Seck and Gorée
Island.
Mr. Hans-Heinrich Wrede's visit ended with courtesy calls to the
Prime Minister, Mr. Macky Sall and Senegal's Head of State, Me Abdoulaye
Wade. |

Born in 1946 in Marienau (Lower-Saxe), Mr. Hans-Heinrich Wrede,
is the first German to become Chairman of the Executive Board
since his country joined UNESCO in 1952. He entered diplomacy
in 1977 after successful law and sociology studies in Koln, Heidelberg,
Lausanne, Paris and New York. It is in July 2002 that Mr.

Wrede began his career at UNESCO, first to represent his country
as permanent delegate to the Executive Board and Vice-President
of this body, to become in October 2003, Chairman of Board. |

Meeting with the Prime Minister
|
The Executive Board is elected by the
General Conference and is one of the three constitutional organs
of UNESCO. It consists of 58 Member States (including Senegal) with
a four-year term of office. Each State Member appoints one representative
and may also appoint alternates. The Executive Board examines the
Organization programme and corresponding budget. It ensures the
effective and rational execution of the programme by the Director-General. |
