UNESCO official urges protection of Gorée Island

Gorée, Senegal (PANA) - UNESCO executive committee chairman Hans-Heinrich Wrede stressed the responsibility Friday here, of the international community in the preservation of Gorée Island, which was declared a world heritage by the UN agency.

"It is our common obligation to preserve this island," Wrede declared during a visit to the Slave House in Goree, where West Africans were held captive before their shipment to the Americas.Wrede was visibly moved as the Curator of the infamous slave post just off Dakar, Joseph Ndiaye recounted the suffering of slaves in transit at Goree.

"This very sad story should teach us a lesson, but we should also learn a positive lesson so that the international can make a new trip of solidarity, sociacommunityl justice and respect of human rights," he urged.
