Planning meeting on the Harmonisation and Introduction
of Context-specific Teaching Centred on Life Skills
( Atlantic Corinthia Hotel, Banjul 4 - 5 July 2005)
|
A 2-day planning meeting on the Harmonisation and Introduction of Context-specific
Teaching Centred on Life Skills was held in Banjul at the Atlantic Corinthia
Hotel. This meeting was attended by curriculum developers and teacher trainers
from The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone with observers from Senegal.
In the framework of the ECOWAS HIV/AIDS education priority programme
prepared by UNESCO-BREDA at the request of ECOWAS Education Ministers and
adopted at their 2nd Conference in January 2004 in Accra, consultations
between The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia governments officials and development
partners including the World Bank, UNICEF, UNESCO and NGOs, PCD (Partnership
for Child Development), NSGA (Nova Scotia Gambia peer education) and GEEP
(Groupe pour l’Etude et l’Enseignement de la Population) has
led to an agreement to support countries in their harmonisation and introduction
of a context-specific teaching centred around life skills in collaboration
with specialized institutes (IBE and IICBA).
After brief country presentations highlighting existing programmes and
didactic tools, development partners related programmes and in collaboration
with participants developed a template for a basic harmonised content
and a workplan that will lead to proposals for a student reader (age 10-12),
a teacher’s guide and introduction in teacher training manuals.
