The Sierra Leone national workshop to accelerate
the education sector response was held in Freetown

Freetown, 25 - 29 April 2005
The Sierra Leone national workshop to accelerate the education sector response was held in Freetown 25 - 29 April 2005 in collaboration with development partners members of UNAIDS' Inter Agency Task Team on HIV/AIDS and Education. UNESCO-BREDA co-facilitated this workshop.

Vice President, Honourable Solomon E. Berewa, opened the workshop in the presence of the ministers of education, science and technology, social welfare, gender and children's affairs, and representatives of the other line ministries.

The workshop was structured in information sessions relating to the science of HIV/AIDS, country assessments from the National Aids Secretariat and the ministry of education and group sessions to perform situation analysis in provinces. Thematic groups discussed issues relating to prevention and teacher training, Orphans and Vulnerable Children, Policy and Tertiary Education. Action plans developed during these work sessions were utilised by teams to prepare regional action plans with a Rapid Result Initiative.

Independence Day coincided with EFA Global week, and celebrations at the National Stadium on 27 April were dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention education. Proud school children paraded with messages showing their commitment to stop the spread of the virus.
