Regional Consultation on
LIFE
Niamey, from 22 to 24 march 2006
|
The Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) is designed
as a global strategic framework through which national governments, NGOs,
civil society, the private sector, UN agencies, and bilateral and multilateral
agencies collectively revitalize and accelerate literacy efforts in countries
where illiteracy poses a critical challenge. This programme will be implemented
in
34 countries with a literacy rate of less 50 per cent or a population
of more than 10 million without literacy competencies. Presently 85% of
the world¹s population without literacy competencies and life skills
live in these countries, the majority of whom are women. LIFE will, therefore,
aim to empower women and girls, in particular, who have inadequate literacy
competencies.
This sub-regional meeting will aim to identify future possible partnerships
between the Sub-Saharan Africa LIFE countries in order to ensure a coordination
of national actions for a successful implementation of LIFE. The Workshop
will offer countries the opportunity to get the same information about
LIFE. The countries will exchange and share drafted national action plans
in order to improve them.
