Launch of the 2007 Global
Monitoring Report on progress towards Education for All focused
on early childhood care and education (ECCE)
Dakar, Senegal, November 27 - 30, 2006

UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Education in Africa (BREDA),
in close collaboration with the Africa Working Group on Early Childhood
Development and UNICEF has organised the regional launch of the 2007 Global
Monitoring Report on progress towards Education for All.
This year, the report focuses on early childhood care and education (ECCE).
The launch meeting will took place at Hotel Teranga, Dakar, Senegal, November
27 - 30, 2006.
This is the first substantial global report on ECCE and, its launch provides
a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the current status of young
children, globally and regionally. This also gives the opportunity to
increase the understanding of the benefits of investing in the early years
as a prerequisite for achieving all other EFA Goals. Although the impact
of early interventions on the child well-being and future achievement
in school is proven.
Very few countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, have developed
national policies for early childhood, that integrates care, health and
nutrition in education. Yet those children who are poor and disadvantaged
stand to benefit most from such programmes.
