Out
of 186 UNESCO Member States,
180 have set up national commissions.
These commissions are made up of renowned figures from the intellectual
and scientific community of the country and, in keeping with
the terms of the Constitutive Act of the Organization, they
constitute a crucial link between this community and UNESCO.
Unique
in this regard within the United Nations, the national commissions
take part in the elaboration, the implementation and the evaluation
of the UNESCO programme.
They
also organize their own activities, such as exhibitions and
conferences, and spread information about the Organization,
often through the publication of books and documents in national
languages.
There is a constant interaction between the UNESCO Secretariat
- at the Headquarters and in the external offices - and national
commissions.
Furthermore,
the meetings between secretary generals of commissions, which
are regularly held at the regional and inter-regional levels,
ensure that UNESCO is kept informed of the local as well as
the global needs.
