UNESCO CLUBS: Creation of a UNESCO Club Within the Senegalese Federation of UNESCO Clubs

UNESCO Clubs gather people of all ages and from a wide variety of socio-professional backgrounds, who share the ideals of UNESCO, seek to propagate them and join the effort of the international organization by carrying out activities that are directly inspired from UNESCO's. The UNESCO Club fosters in the individual the emergence of moral and intellectual virtues by offering him/her the possibility of quenching his/her thirst of knowledge and understanding.

It gradually makes him/her capable of transcending his/her selfishness and setting up a chain of solidarity with others that unites differences around common values. There are Civil Clubs and School Clubs.

b. Steps in the creation of a UNESCO Club

The creation of a UNESCO Club in Senegal is regulated by the Senegalese Federation of UNESCO Clubs (S.F.U.C.).

Step : 1

There needs to be a core group of people who are familiar with the UNESCO movement. This core group then launches activities to inform people and raise public awareness. At this stage, the support of the Senegalese Federation of UNESCO Clubs can be sought. This core constitutes what can be called the founders or guarantors.

Step : 2

A membership drive is organized in the form of a meeting convened in order to agree on the creation of a UNESCO Club with the aim to serve the UNESCO movement. This is called the General Assembly. A bureau is then elected and internal rules are adopted.

Step : 3

An application is sent to the Senegalese Federation of UNESCO Clubs (S.F.U.C.) containing the following documents:

- A request for approval in the form of a letter addressed to the President of the S.F.U.C. bearing the full contact address of the club (including the phone and fax numbers, postal box, etc.)

- A copy of the minutes of the constitutive General Assembly and related documents (attendance list, bureau, managing committee, etc.)

- The list of founding members, including their Surname, First Name, Occupation and Full Address.

For School Clubs, the application must bear the stamp of approval of the Head Teacher.

Step : 4

The S.F.U.C. reviews the application and sends a commission of inquiry to the group (interview, field work, etc.). The S.F.U.C. bureau then statutes on the application at one of its meetings.

Step : 5

If the group is approved, it pays a membership fee of 10,000 CFA Francs. The letter of approval is then issued. The relevant administrative authorities are sent a copy (Prefect, Sub-prefect, Inspector, Head Teacher...)

NB : Any association already recognized by the State can become a UNESCO Club as an associate member
