 Recruitment - Professional category

The professional category (P) groups specialists in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and administration. Posts in this category are subject to the principle of recruitment on a wide geographical basis. Therefore, all other things being equal, priority is given to candidates coming from under-represented or not represented Member States of UNESCO.

For more junior posts in the Professional category (P1 - P2 level) the minimum qualifications generally required are : a university degree; two or three years of professional experience; a perfect knowledge of either French or English and a good knowledge of the other language. For some posts knowledge of another of the official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Russian, Chinese or Spanish) can be required. As a general rule, the normal age for these posts is up to thirty-five.

Young graduates, citizen of non - or under-represented countries who possess a few years of professional experience can also apply to the Young Professionals Programme. For more information about this programme, they should contact the National Commission for UNESCO in the country concerned.

For more senior posts in the Professional category (P3 - P5 level) the minimum qualifications required generally are : a higher university degree (Master degree, for example), as well as several years of professional experience in a position of responsibility in a field relating to UNESCO's programmes. Candidates for these posts must have a perfect knowledge of English or French and be able to write clearly and concisely in one of these languages. Usually a good working knowledge of the other language is also required. Knowledge of another of the official languages of the Organization is often an advantage.

UNESCO posts are located at Headquarters (Paris, France) and throughout the world. In January 2001, 346 professional staff members worked in field offices as compared to 674 at Headquarters.
